MUSEUMS IN DENVER

From Golden, take the #16 bus on weekdays. On weekends, take the #44 and exit on 15th and Blake. Directions for the museums which follow are given from 15th and Blake. The rider should walk to the RTD station at 15th and Market and from there catch the free 16th Street Mall shuttle.

1. Black American West Museum and Heritage Center, 3091 California St., 292-2566. Exhibits on the heritage of blacks in the West. From the 16th Street Mall shuttle, exit at California and take bus #38 heading north. FEE
2. Byers-Evans House, 1310 Bannock, 620-4933. Restored Victorian mansion. Includes Denver History Museum, with displays about Denver's people and events. Take the 16th Street Mall Shuttle to the Capitol. Walk toward the Denver Art Museum, which is south of the capitol, on Broadway and turn right (west) on 13th. From bus #16, ride to the end of the ride, exit and walk to Broadway and follow the above directions. FEE
3. Children's Museum, 2121 Children's Museum Dr., 433-7433. Hands-on museum allows children to touch and play. 23rd Ave. exit off I-25. Take bus #10 from downtown Denver. FEE
4. Clements/Enterprise Hill Historic District, 2100 block of Tremont and Glenarm, 534-1858. Denver's oldest surviving residential neighborhood, with 22 buildings in 8 Victorian architectural styles. Tremont and Glenarm are exits on the 16th St. Mall Shuttle. The 2100 block is north of these streets so exit and go left.
5. Colorado Governor's Mansion, 400 E. 8th Ave., 866-3682. Tours May through August. Exit the 16th St. Mall shuttle on Broadway and walk south on Broadway to 8th Ave. and turn left or east.
6. Colorado History Museum, 1300 Broadway, 866-3682. Fee. Traces the history of the state. 16th St. Mall shuttle to the end; walk on Broadway to 13th and turn left.
7. Colorado Railroad Museum, 17155 Q. 44th Ave., Golden. (See: Golden) FEE
8. Colorado State Capitol, Broadway and Colfax, 866-2604. Free tours weekdays. Gold-plated dome; home of the state legislature. 16th St. Mall shuttle to the end. Head south to Colfax, then turn left (east). The Capitol is very near Cheyenne Place, where the Bus #16 arrives and departs.
9. Denver Art Museum, 100 W. 14th, 640-2793. Free on 1st Sat.; fee at other times. Special exhibitions, plus in-house displays. 16th St. Mall bus to the end; then walk on Broadway south to the Civic Center Park, turn right on 14th. This unique building looks like a fortress.
10. Denver Firefighters Museum, 1326 Tremont Place, 892-1436. Fee. 16th St. Mall bus to the Tremont exit. Turn right and walk south past 14th St.
11. Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls, and Toys, 1880 Gaylord St., 322-3704. Fee. Gaylord is two blocks west of University. Ride the 16th St. Mall shuttle to the end and walk one block south to Colfax, where you can catch #15 bus. Or from the Market St. terminal, take the #15 and exit at Gaylord. Turn left and go north 3 blocks.
12. Denver Museum of Natural History, Colorado and Montview Blvds., 322-7009. Includes IMAX Theater, Gates Planetarium. Fee based on how much you want to see: museum, IMAX, Planetarium. Special exhibitions, plus Dinosaur skeletons, Indian artifacts, dioramas of Colorado and elsewhere. From Market St. station take the #15 bus to Colorado Blvd. and transfer to the #20 or #32, heading north; get off at Montview.
13. Grant Humphreys Mansion, 770 Pennsylvania St., 894-2505. Built at the turn of the century. From the end of the 16th St. Mall shuttle, walk south on Broadway to 8th Ave. and turn left. Fee. Reservations.
15. Molly Brown House Museum, 1340 Pennsylvania, 832-4092. Once home of the famous "Unsinkable Molly Brown," who survived the Titanic disaster. Fee. Located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood. #15 bus to Grant; walk south (right) to 14th; house is on the left.
16. Museo De Las Americas, 861 Santa Fe Dr., 571-4401. Tuesday-Sat., 10:00-4:30. Exhibits of Latin American culture. To drive: take 6th Ave. east and exit on Santa Fe. Go north towards downtown Denver; the museum is between 7th and 8th Avenues. Bus: the #50 bus goes south on Kalamath, which is one block west of Santa Fe. Kalamath is a one-way street, so returning by bus the rider would get on the bus on Santa Fe. FEE
17. Museum of Western Art, 1727 Tremont Pl, 296-1880. 125 classic Western paintings and bronze sculptures. Take the 16th St. Mall shuttle and get off on Tremont. Walk north (left from the Mall) past 17th St.
18. Ninth St. Historic Park, on the Auraria Campus at Speer and Auraria Blvd. 14 restored historic homes and St. Cajetan's Catholic Church and Golda Meir House. From Blake or Market, walk south across Auraria Parkway. Turn left at the university and walk east along Speer; turn right when you see the church.
19. Pearce-McAllister Cottage, 1880 Gaylord St., 322-3704. 1899 Dutch Colonial Revival house contains original furnishings. Its 2nd floor houses the Denver Museum of Miniatures, Dolls, and Toys. Gaylord is two blocks west of University. Ride the 16th St. Mall shuttle to the end and walk one block south to Colfax, where you can catch #15 bus. Or from the Market St. terminal, take the #15 and exit at Gaylord. Turn left and go north 3 blocks.
