INTERLINK TEACHER WEBSITES & PRESENTATIONS

The Affective Domain A presentation by Anthony Prato, who teaches at the INTERLINK Center at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. This slideshow was presented at the Carolina TESOL Conference in Charleston, SC on June 14, 2008. The first half of the presentation briefly describes the ideas of some important advocates of Experiential Learning. The second part shows how Experiential Learning can be used for the INTERLINK's CS5 Vocation Exploration Project, and then prompts the viewer to apply the principles to the CS1 Shopping Spree Project.

philosophy_cafe Philosophy Café is a blog operated by Mrs. Lobat Asadi, an English teacher at the Women's Division of the Saudi INTERLINK Language Center (SILC) at Al Yamamah College, Riaydh, Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia. It aims to give an internet voice to Saudi female students, whose own blogs are linked to the page on the left hand side. Since its inception in 2006, Philosophy Café and its connected blogs have developed into bridge building tools that link Saudi students to individuals from around the world to discuss topics related to the development of Saudi Arabia. Mrs. Asadi, who is an American of Middle Eastern heritage with a background in Journalism, Middle Eastern Studies and ESL, has worked and lived in Saudi Arabia for about 4 years. She also comments on relevant issues from the perspective of an interconnected expatriate, and welcomes any suggestions and proposed topics for discussion and the blogging project.

Carl's Web Quizzes & Quests is a site created by Carl W. Hart, an ESL instructor at the Interlink Language Center at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana USA. Each Flash-based reading and listening quiz is linked to another site in which students are able to read a few pages from a book, listen to an excerpt from a song, listen to a National Public Radio (NPR) story or read a Wikipedia article. Within the linked site, the students read or listen for the answers to the quiz questions and then return to the quiz to submit their answers. Carl's hope is that the site will be novel and enjoyable as well as useful. In addition to the quizzes, quests are designed to provide a diversion for ESL teachers--something to do while students are taking the quizzes. In addition, Carl has recently created a new web site title Carl's Web Quests. Like his other site, this one features Flash-based quizzes similar to scavenger hunts with clues similar to crossword puzzle clues. The answers are found in Wikipedia articles which open in a separate window or tab. Carl began his career in Chicago and has 21 years of experience in Mexico, Equatorial Guinea, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. He is the author of Breaking the Language Barrier (North Light Press), The Ultimate Phrasal Verb Book (Barron's), graded reader biographies of Nelson Mandela (Macmillan) and Barack Obama (Macmillan, forthcoming). He is currently developing a reading series for University of Michigan Press titled Amazing Stories from History, the intermediate level of which will be published in late 2009 with the low intermediate and high intermediate to follow in 2010.
